I’m Alex: Crafting Creative Solutions with an Interdisciplinary Approach

My Story

Since this portfolio focuses heavily on my professional and academic work, I thought it might be a good idea to share a slightly more personal, less LinkedIn version of myself with you. So, here’s a little more about me as a person, beyond the work.

My friends would likely describe me as funny, their words not mine, and when I’m not cracking a joke you’ll probably find me on the football pitch (which I imagine accounts for around half of my waking hours).

On a deeper level, I’d describe myself as empathetic, I enjoy getting to know people beyond surface-level chit chat. I try to see the good in people and situations, even when it’s challenging, and I hope that energy resonates with those around me.

In terms of lifestyle, I enjoy staying active, eating well, and cooking (I’m no Bryan Johnson, but i think I can live with that… probably not for as long as he will though). I’m passionate about creating a career that I truly enjoy, where I can take pride in the work I do. Enthusiasm and dedication are key to me, and I aim to bring that energy into everything I pursue.

I’ve always had an inquisitive nature, and I get a thrill from new experiences. Whether that’s exploring new places, immersing myself in different ways of life, or gaining fresh perspectives, I see it as a privilege to have these opportunities. I want to bring that mindset into my working life as well, approaching each new challenge with curiosity and a sense of adventure.

Ultimately, I think my friendships are what make me rich in life. I aim to reciprocate that wealth of connection by spreading it to other networks—whether that’s through work or personal connections.

Education

The London Interdisciplinary School (LIS)

I achieved First Class Honours studying a Bachelor of Arts and Science (BASc) in Interdisciplinary Problems and Methods.

I was also a member of the founding cohort for this pioneering university focused on real-world problem-solving.

LIS was founded in 2021, and is based in East London. To find out more about the university and the BASc course, click here.

WHAT IS A BACHELOR OF ARTS AND SCIENCE dEGREE?

During my time at LIS, I gained knowledge in a multitude of disciplines, research methods, and (super)concepts.

For example, techniques from data science are paired with philosophies from contemporary art, and then supported by evidence from neuroscience to triangulate knowledge. This interdisciplinary approach, aims to explore complex systems or problems and work towards understanding their underlying epistemology, ultimately enabling the creation, innovation, and collaboration of ideas to address the issue at hand.

Using Quantitative and Qualitative research methods together

As a student I always tried to push myself to learn new and unfamiliar disciplines. As a result, I have come away from my time at university with experience in the following skillsets and knowledge areas.

Research Methods: Applied Ethnography, Causal Modelling, Campaigning, Data Science, Coding, Design Thinking, Historical Methods, Interview Techniques, Natural Language Processing, Participant Observation, Statistical Analysis, Quantitative Modelling, Storytelling, Systems Thinking, Thematic Analysis, Visual Methods, Visual Narratives.

Disciplinary Knowledge: Contemporary Art, Technology & Culture Studies, Theology, Legal & Political Theory, Polymer Chemistry, Network Science, Neuroscience.

Additional Modules & Skills: Superconcepts & Mental Models, Criticality, Synthesis, Process.

Strengths

Innovative Solutions

Innovative Solutions ignite change. I blend ideas from different fields to craft creative interventions. By analysing complex issues, I identify effective interventions that drive real results. Whether itʼs tackling social challenges or enhancing experiences, I aim to inspire fresh perspectives and impactful outcomes.

Engaging Storytelling

Engaging Storytelling transforms ideas into captivating narratives, inspiring audiences to take action. Through videos, podcasts, and visual methods, I combine together research and creativity to share compelling stories.

Data-Driven Insights

Data-Driven Insights turn numbers into meaningful stories. I analyse and visualise data to uncover patterns and trends. Tools such as statistical modeling and natural language processing, help to provide a rigorous foundation for more qualitative research.

Holistic Approach

Part of understanding a complex problem is to understand each individual element, how it interacts with other elements, and its influence within the context of a wider system. In combining systems thinking and interdisciplinary knowledge, I aim to address the route causes of a complex problem, rather than its symptoms.

Collaborative Design

By engaging stakeholders throughout the process, collaborative design synthesises bodies of knowledge and embodied experiences to co-create impactful solutions that work for the communities and context in which they operate within.

Coaching

I have over a year’s worth of experience in both academic and personal well-being contexts, as well as in sports. I find fulfillment in supporting individuals on their personal journeys and witnessing their growth over time. This role has deepened my understanding of the importance of empathy, and I strive to bring this level of understanding into all of my work.
